A card game involving betting, Poker has many variations, but it generally involves a fixed number of cards being dealt to each player. The players make bets based on the strength of their cards. The player with the best hand wins the round and the money that was bet during it.
The rules of Poker vary, but most require players to place an initial amount into the pot, called an ante, before they are dealt their cards. This can be done either in addition to or instead of the mandatory “blind” bets that are made by the players to the left of the dealer.
Once the antes and blinds have been placed, the first betting interval begins. The player to the left of the dealer has the option to call the bet, raise it, or drop out (or fold). A player who calls a bet places chips into the pot equal to the amount raised by the player before them. If a player decides not to call a bet, they must “drop” out of the betting and discard their cards.
The goal of the game is to beat other players by making the strongest possible five-card hand from the seven cards you have been dealt. The player with the highest valued hand wins, but in some cases it is more important to win by scaring your opponents into folding, or simply by having tenacity and courage and not giving up.
