Poker has a number of different terminology that may be unfamiliar to new players. These terms are important to understand if you want to become a better poker player.
Action
In a poker game, each player is dealt three face-down cards and two face-up cards. They must use these cards to create their best five-card poker hand, which is called a hand. The highest possible hand is the royal flush, which is made up of a 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace in the same suit (all clubs, diamonds, hearts or spades).
Betting rounds
Each betting round begins with the first player to act. In these betting rounds, each player may bet or raise a certain amount.
To call is to match a bet or raise. To fold is to leave the pot without making a bet or raising.
The pot
In a poker game, the pot is the sum of all the money that players have put into the pot. It may be won by the player who has the best hand or by the player who makes a bet that no other player calls.
