Generally, a player’s goal in poker is to win money. Players wager on their best hand, according to the rules of the game. The highest hand wins the pot. Depending on the rules of the game, the winner may be a player or a dealer.
The game is played with a standard deck of cards. Each player is dealt seven cards. The dealer deals each player’s cards face up. Each player can discard up to three cards. After revealing the cards, the player can either call or fold.
In some games, a player can be forced to make a bet, such as a blind or ante. The purpose of a blind is to provide a player with something to chase. If the player folds, he loses the bet.
If there are more players than there are cards, the game proceeds to a Showdown. This is the last round of betting. During the final round of betting, a player can either be all-in or call. A player can be all-in if he owes less than a certain amount of money to the pot. When a player is all-in, he is only eligible to win the pot to which he contributed.
If there are multiple people who are tied for the highest card, a high card breaks the tie. If there are no ties, a hand of two pairs and a fifth card will win. Typically, a straight flush starts with the highest card.
